Freedom Ball

Freedom Ball was a guerilla intervention in public space that challenged whether Hong Kong parks were designed, managed and regulated for the benefit of Hong Kong people. Large red balls were placed in parks, encouraging the public to interact in ways that challenged park design and regulations, sparking discussions between the public and park management. This led to public discussion and surveys, TV and press coverage and eventually meeting with government departments, workshops with park management and a large scale intervention filling Shatin Park with hundreds of balls. In the end this led to significant changes in park design, management and regulation as well as commitments to having open, flexible public space in all new park designs, removing restrictions on activities and starting the process of removing fences restricting public access in existing parks.
